Du Lac revision could prohibit ads for events where alcohol is served

Advertisem ents referring to al coholic beverages will be prohibited from all university p roperty according to proposed changes in next year's Du Lac by Dean of Students Jam es R o em er. “This is a totally new issue. Before w e w ere talking about the use o f al cohol. Now, w e’re talking about the right o f studen ts for inform ation," said David G rote, a m em ber o f the Judicial Council. The issue was dis cussed at last night’s council meeting. The presen t version o f Du Lac states, “The advertising o f alcohol is prohibited on cam pus.” The proposed tex t states, “Events involv ing the use of alcohol w hich directly o r indirectly refer to alcoholic beverages in any form cannot be ad vertised o r posted on any University p roperty including bulletin boards, trees, posts, o r o th e r p roperty on the University grounds.” “Its seem s th e University is se tt ling ou t to im plem ent an alcohol policy tha t has already been decided on,” G rote said. A tigh ter alcohol policy means studen ts will go off cam pus to attend parties. The proposed change w ould hinder studen ts from learning about those parties through advertise ments, said sources w ith in the co u n cil w ho asked no t to be identified. These same sources said the change follows the trend tow ards a tigh ter University alcohol policy. Joe Roveda, head o f th e Du Lac Review C om m ittee, said, “1 haven’t discussed the proposal w ith Dean Roemer, so I don’t know w hat his m otives are.” Bill Bergamo, a council m em ber, said, “Basically, it’s in Du Lac right now.
